For 10 days in May, I had the joy of transporting a group of pilgrims around this Island that I have grown to love. We visited sites from the northeastern corner to the south-west Dingle peninsula. Dr. Doug Hardy was our guide… I had the joy of driving and cooking meals. Sarah, who put together most of the logistics, drove the other van and led in other ways. We were seeking to walk in the footprints of those who have gone before us… all the while heeding the voice of our God.
We visited Dingle, Mt. Brendan, and Brendan Cove. I’d never visited this part of the country before and I was not disappointed. It was breathtaking, as you can see. Yet for all the beauty, what grabbed me was the story of this man called Brendan. St. Brendan, called of God, set out for the new world in not much more than a rowing boat. He risked everything, stepping into the unknown, to follow this call. And he didn’t do this early in life, but much later. As I have reflected on his story I find myself recalling these words from Wesley’s Covenant Renewal Service.
“I am no longer my own but yours. Put me to what you will, rank me with whom you will. Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be employed for you or laid aside for you, exalted for you or brought low for you. Let me be full, let me be empty. Let me have all things, let me have nothing. I freely and wholeheartedly yield all things to your pleasure and disposal. And now, glorious and blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, you are mine and I am yours. So be it. And the covenant now made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven. Amen.”
Those words echo in my heart… I want to follow after Him… I want to be responsive to HIS call… wherever HE leads. Maybe you’re thinking… “you’re a missionary, you already did that? Perhaps, but let me ask you this… are we ever done? Is not the call to follow an ongoing call? I don’t know about you, but like Brendan I want to adventure with God. Let us in our prayer be open to His leading no matter our age or the day.
I wonder where he’ll lead us? I wonder where he’ll lead you? Let’s pray for each other in this… that we’ll walk in HIS footprints.
