The green, white and orange! I've spent some time looking at the flag of Ireland. Have you seen it?
I know it's not red, white and blue... but let me tell you it's beautiful and every time I see it I'm reminded why we're going to Ireland. There is wonderful meaning in it, meaning that is still struggling to be completely embraced.
The green speaks for the Irish Catholic.
The orange speaks for the Irish Protestant.
If you know the history of Ireland you know those two groups, put together, have caused their share of fireworks. Yet if you look at the flag you'll notice between the Green and the Orange you have white. That white speaks to reconciliation, the desire for peace.
If you're a news hound you know Ireland is going through some rough waters these days... the Celtic Tiger has been tamed. There's a great deal of uncertainty, not much unlike in our own nation. Those things that were thought to be secure are crumbling. Guess what, Christ remains. When everything else fails, Christ is STILL standing. "Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God." Psalm 20:7
We've been called to go to Ireland... to lift up the ROCK which is Christ. And HE has committed to us the message of reconciliation. So every time you see the Irish flag, instead of focusing on the green or the orange... focus on the white and pray for reconciliation.
