Happy St. Patricks Day!

For some the mention of St. Patrick's Day leads them to think about whether they're wearing something green.  For others it's about those little leprechaun or the opportunity to drink.

Yet the reality is St. Patrick Day celebrates the life of a man who changed the course of history in Ireland.  In the 5th Century. St. Patrick was first carried off to Ireland as a child, becoming a slave shepherd.  Yet incredibly later in life at the age of 48 he returned.  He came to a pagan land, in response to the call of God, where he was used of God to transform that society.

Patrick's genius was his ability to use common symbols, symbols that were often used by the Druid's in their religious observance.  One of the great symbols Patrick used was the shamrock.  This symbol, used in Druid worship, was redeemed by Patrick who used it to speak of our Triune God.

So on this St. Patrick's Day whether you have a Shamrock Shake or see a shamrock lapel pin, allow the image of a shamrock to remind you of our great God, a God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Happy St. Patricks Day!
